Fragrant Hosta Blooms

Bloom from hosta 'Fragrant Bouquet'

At the end of the summer, beginning of fall there are some hostas that are just beginning to bloom.  Many of the late summer blooms are dark purple in color or are fragrant.  Fragrant hosta blooms are usually larger in size.  Some are so strong that you just have to walk into the garden to enjoy their scent.  The scent is much like a lily of the valley.  Like lily, hosta flowers are more fragrant in the late afternoon/evening.  Some, like plantiginea, only bloom in the late afternoon/evening.  Hosta plantiginea has blooms that are up to 4 inches long, and is the mother of all fragrant hosta available on the market.  Here is a list of hosta with fragrant blooms: Fragrant Blooming Hosta List.

Hello Hosta Whisperer:) I knew they bloomed...but didn't know about the smell. I must be losing my brain. It has been a long time ago that I once lived in the land of the hosta...craving cheese curds right now. Hope you're school year has started off on a good note.

Do you find less fragrance this year? I think so, but I'd be hard pressed to prove it.

I attribute it to lack of rain.

Thank you for the list of fragrant hostas! I have dozens of hostas in the garden, but this summer was the first time I noticed the fragrance--and only because my hubby broke a flower stalk and brought it inside to me. I was so surprised--how did I not notice their lovely fragrance before? I'm definitely going to reference your list when adding to my collection. (I just found your site, and I'm so glad I did! What a great resource!) Look forward to many returned visits.

I know less of my fragrant hosta had blooms this year. In fact Guacamole had one flower stalk this year, where in the past it probably had 10-15 stalks. I am assuming it's the lack of rain too.

Julie, thanks for visiting! Hope to see you often!
