Today could be the day! It could be the day we decide wether or not to put our house on the market. Honestly, I have outgrown (no pun intended) my yard. My husband and I have been casually looking, mostly on the computer, at houses with bigger yards. We kept saying we were only trying to get ideas of what was out there, but things are starting to look more real now. We stopped at an open house on Sunday and really liked the house and yard. So tonight we have the realtor coming out to give us the market value on our house. If it's in the right price range, the house is going on the market. If it's too low in the current market, we will stay here for another year or two.
So what happens if we put the house on the market?? I have spent the last 9 years collecting hostas, and have over 400 different varieties in my yard. There are some that are irreplaceable, and I already know those are going with me. Do you think it would depend on the buyer, or should I stipulate right away that many of the plants are coming with me? I could obviously divide and leave parts of most of the hostas with the house. Perhaps the realtors will have more answers for me. I just know that I have invested a lot of time and money in my plants, and I don't really want to start over completely.

This is my honest opinion because I had to do it myself. Take the exclusive hostas with you and leave everything else behind. New yard, new beginnings, and a new garden. And I mean that from the bottom of my heart. BUT DO bring your pots etc. The only thing I brought with me since my early adult years was a little orange tree that I began as a seed in Stevens Point. It moved to Arizona with me and today is in a well next to my house growing larger and larger every year:) It's today 15 years old:) Plus all those hostas in the yard will help sell your home quicker. Buyers don't have an imagination. You have a paradise....they're going to love what you've done. Good luck!
Thanks, and I think some of it will depend on the buyer. There are some people that will love the yard, and there are others who will want to rip everything out. I still honestly think in this market we are going to have to stay in our house a year or two, but we'll see what the realtors say.
See what your realtor says but I think you have to stipulate up front that some plants are coming with you. When someone buys your house they are buying they property and everything attached to it unless you stipulate otherwise. I wouldn't be able to handle seeing someone let my garden go to weeds. I'd be heartbroken. I hope if you do sell you find a buyer that appreciates the beautiful space you've created.
I think Rohrerbot's answer is right on the money. Also, check if the next owner would just cover it all with sod and if that's what they plan to do, take as much as you can with you.
I agree, I can't take everything with me. It would be impossible. But if I were to find out the buyer didn't like the plants and was planning on taking everything out then I would dig up a lot!
